Wynkyn's Lessons from the Net

Wynkyn has learned some very valuable lessons since he first got introduced to the Internet...

He has listed them here so others can learn from his experiences...

Wynkyn learned that if he treats people in a chivalrous manner and with respect, he makes lots of friends here on the Net...

Wynkyn discovered you don't actually have to meet someone to become very good friends...

Wynkyn learned an important lesson very early... He heard that when chatting, it is common to pretend to be someone you are not... Wynkyn tried this with the very first person he chatted with... But 15 minutes later, he "confessed" everything and started again... He learned that if a relationship isn't based on honesty, it is empty and pointless... And not worth doing...

Wynkyn learned a curious thing... He learned that he cannot explain his Net Friends to his non-Net Friends... No matter how carefully or how enthusiastically he tried to explain, it failed to do justice to the warm feelings Wynkyn had for his Net Friends... Eventually Wynkyn stopped trying to explain...

Wynkyn learned that when he does not know what someone looks like, it is surprising how many really nice people he meets... This made Wynkyn sad, because he thought it should be that way in the Real World too...

Wynkyn learned a very sad lesson one day... He was talking with a gentle free spirit he had just met, when another called him... Wynkyn left the new friend to speak with the old friend... He hurt that first gentle soul, and she has closed herself to him... He could not even apologize... <sad>

He learned a painful lesson from an elusive person.  Some people believe the Net is the perfect shield for treating others in ways that Wynkyn would not do... He learned that if people are secretive about their names and identities it sometimes says a lot about that person and their intentions... Wynkyn felt sorry for the ones before and the ones yet to come...

Wynkyn was 'shocked' to learn that some people he met for the first time had a powerful and immediate effect on him... Things just seem to click right away, and it was as if he had known them forever...

Wynkyn learned that when people first meet on the Net, it is not appropriate to share too much 'Real World' information about each other... As you get to know each other better, there will be plenty of time to share such things...

Wynkyn also learned that you do not have to answer every question you are asked...

Wynkyn was surprised that many chats with new people could go on for a long time (to the enjoyment of both parties) and neither he nor they ever asked a/s/l (chat shorthand for age/sex/location)...  It just never seemed to come up...  Wynkyn decided that must show how really unimportant such things are...  It made him wonder why so many people start off with that question...  And if they knew how much they were missing when they thought the answer to those questions made any difference...

Wynkyn's Net Friends continue to teach him new things every day... And Wynkyn appreciates their patience with him as he struggles to learn his lessons... <smile>
